DuPont Hails Safety of Chilean Mining

DuPont today announced that it recently presented a DuPont Recognition for Safety Performance award to the government of Chile to mark high performance and constant improvement by the country’s mining industry. The award was presented by DuPont Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Richard Goodmanson, DuPont Latin America President Eduardo Wanick, and DuPont Chile President Martin Gonzalez.

“We are honored to receive this award. It’s very important to promote mining safety. Training and safety tools contribute to improved performance,” said Veronica Baraona, Chile’s mining sub-secretary.

Another international development in safety in the recent days was France’s release of 2007 statistics. The country recorded 622 fatal accidents in 2007, a 16 percent increase, with construction and transport incidents both rising. Occupational diseases for 2007 rose by 3.6 percent, to 43,832, with musculoskeletal disorders accounting for 70 percent of all cases. And 3M announced Oct. 7 that it has bought a small food safety company in Oslo, Norway.

Food Diagnostics AS, which has five employees, provides food diagnostic products and services for Norway’s food safety industry, according to 3M, which did not disclose terms of the acquisition. The deal expands 3M’s ability to assist food suppliers’ laboratories with detection systems, antimicrobial products, and quality monitoring systems, the company said.
