Highway Safety Group Sues for Information on Mexican Trucks Program

The Public Citizen Litigation Group filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit March 13 against the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to force the agency to release information about its pilot program allowing Mexican trucks on U.S. highways.

The named plaintiff is the group Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety; the four-page suit is online at www.citizen.org/documents/fmcsacomplaint.pdf.

Advocates filed a FOIA request with FMCSA in October 2006 for information about any program to evaluate Mexican motor carriers that would be permitted to operate beyond the border zone, and the agency did not comply within the statutorily required 20 working days, according to the suit, which is filed in a Washington, D.C., federal court.
