The Council presented the Excellence Award to Schneider National, the Innovation Awards to Brigham Health Sleep Matters Initiative, and the Advocate Award to Common Ground Alliance 811 Campaign during a ceremony on Wednesday in Chicago.

“Brigham Health, Common Ground Alliance and Schneider National have helped improve safety at home, at work and on our roadways,” said NSC President and CEO Deborah A.P. Hersman. “They share the Council’s mission to eliminate preventable deaths and make the world measurably safer. We are proud to honor them and to recognize all the outstanding finalists.”

According to an NSC survey, 43 percent of adults admit they may be too tired to function safely at work. Brigham Health Sleep Matters Initiative is designed to address sleep deficiency through its education and sleep disorders screening programs. Its program has resulted in a 50 percent decrease in injuries, disability days, and instances of moderate to severe psychological distress.

Common Ground Alliance (CGA) was established to develop a national public awareness campaign focused on the importance of calling 811 before excavating to ensure underground utility lines are not disturbed during work. Since the campaign began, damaged lines have decreased by 50 percent and excavation damage is no longer the leading cause of pipeline-related injury and death.

In 2012, Schneider Natioanl began implementing forward-looking, radar-based systems to monitor vehicle distance, speed, and deceleration to help drivers avoid colliding into cars in front of them. At present, more than 95 percent of Schneider’s company trucks are equipped with collision mitigation to supplement drivers’ reactions. As a result, Schneider’s rear-end collisions have dropped 68 percent and crash severity has dropped 95 percent.

The nine finalists for the three award categories were selected, reviewed, and evaluated by an external panel.
