This year's National Preparedness Month is officially under way. The theme this year is: "Don't Wait. Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today."
FEMA and many other federal and state agencies are encouraging U.S. residents to ensure they are ready for emergencies -- although Western states' residents already have been coping with wildfires this summer.
Every September is National Preparedness Month. Agencies want residents to make a plan with their community and their family to stay safe and communicate during the disasters that can affect their community. The national day of action, National PrepareAthon! Day, is Sept. 30.
The weekly themes are:
- Sept. 1-5: flood
- Sept. 6-12: wildfire
- Sept. 13-19: hurricane
- Sept. 20-26: power outage
- Sept. 27-30: leading up to National PrepareAthon! Day
