ANSI to Release Health Info Security Report

A March 5 news conference to unveil it will include Howard A. Schmidt, the White House cybersecurity coordinator, and Joe Bhatia, president and CEO of the American National Standards Institute.

Following the release of the new White House "Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights," described as the core component of a comprehensive report to enhance consumer privacy protections, ANSI has scheduled a March 5 news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to discuss security protections for health care organizations and the financial impact of breached protected health information (PHI).

To be unveiled during the news conference is a report titled "The Financial Impact of Breached Protected Health Information: A Business Case for Enhanced PHI Security," which provides a five-step method to help organizations assess specific security risks and build a business case for enhanced PHI security. The method is PHIve (the PHI Value Estimator).

The government report, "Consumer Data Privacy in a Networked World: a Framework for Protecting Privacy and Promoting Innovation in the Global Digital Economy," is intended to give consumers more control over how their personal information is used online. "Privacy protections are critical to maintaining consumer trust in networked technologies," it states. "When consumers provide information about themselves —- whether it is in the context of an online social network that is open to public view or a transaction involving sensitive personal data —- they reasonably expect companies to use this information in ways that are consistent with the surrounding context."

Schmidt has been invited to address the news conference along with Joe Bhatia, president and CEO of the American National Standards Institute; Catherine Allen, chairman and CEO of The Santa Fe Group; Larry Clinton, president and CEO of the Internet Security Alliance; Rick Kam, president and co-founder of ID Experts and chairman of the PHI Project; James C. Pyles, principal in Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville PC; Lynda Martel, director, Privacy Compliance Communications, for DriveSavers Data Recovery; and Mary Chaput, CFO and chief compliance officer at Clearwater Compliance.

"The Financial Impact of Breached Protected Health Information: A Business Case for Enhanced PHI Security" was created through the PHI Project, which is a collaboration of ANSI's Theft Prevention and Identity Management Standards Panel, The Santa Fe Group/Shared Assessments Program Healthcare Working Group, and the Internet Security Alliance (ISA). The full document will be available for free download at webstore.ansi.org/phi at 10 a.m. March 5.
