ACC, CIAC Align Responsible Care Certification Across U.S. and Canada

The American Chemistry Council and the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada renewed an agreement to harmonize Responsible Care certification, streamlining compliance and auditing for chemical manufacturers operating in both countries.

The American Chemistry Council and the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada have renewed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cross-border collaboration and align Responsible Care certification requirements across the chemical industry.

Under the agreement, CIAC will adopt the ACC Responsible Care Management System/RC14001 certification model as the exclusive pathway for its member companies to meet Responsible Care certification requirements.

Responsible Care is the chemical industry’s environmental, health, safety, and security performance initiative. The updated agreement is intended to harmonize certification processes, expand auditor capacity, and provide consistent implementation support across both countries.

The organizations said the alignment will streamline certification for companies operating in both the United States and Canada by reducing duplicative audits and clarifying expectations under a unified framework. Both groups plan to coordinate training, documentation, and outreach efforts to member companies and auditing bodies.

Industry leaders said the renewed partnership reinforces a shared commitment to continuous improvement, safety performance, and transparency within the chemical sector.
