AIHA Releases New eBook to Help Workplaces and Schools Fight Airborne Disease Risk

The free “Healthier Workplaces and Schools” guide offers risk-assessment tools and mitigation strategies designed for non-technical decision makers to combat airborne infectious diseases.

The American Industrial Hygiene Association has released Version 2 of its Healthier Workplaces and Schools eBook, aiming to simplify and strengthen how workplaces and schools mitigate the risk of airborne infectious diseases.

The updated guide, published under the Commit to C.A.R.E. initiative, provides concise, expert-backed advice on critical elements such as Duration, Density, Distance, and Dilution, which are key to evaluating and managing exposure in indoor settings. It offers tools and recommendations tailored for environments ranging from classrooms and healthcare facilities to offices and retail spaces.

One major focus is infectious disease insight—highlighting how pathogens like COVID-19, RSV and seasonal flu spread, and what steps organizations can take to reduce transmission. The guide also includes indoor air quality strategies, risk assessment tools, and resources for establishing safer practices.

“Organizations need actionable layers of protection to keep shared indoor spaces safer,” said Lawrence Sloan, AIHA CEO. He emphasized that Version 2 consolidates previous guidance into a more accessible format, so decision-makers can act quickly without wading through overly technical content.

Alongside the eBook, the Commit to C.A.R.E. platform offers supplemental tools including quick-start guides, worksheets, and infographics. These resources are designed to help teams roll out safety improvements with clarity and consistency.

With concerns about airborne disease risks continuing in schools, workplaces and other public areas, this update provides a timely blueprint for creating healthier indoor environments.

The eBook is available for free at commit2care.org/resources-aiha.
