DOL Introduces AI Best Practices During Online Event

The new guidelines emphasize the ethical usage of AI, aiming to improve job quality and protect workers.

During an online event on Oct. 16, 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor unveiled its AI Best Practices, designed to guide employers and developers in the ethical use of AI.

The document, titled “Artificial Intelligence And Worker Well-being: Principles And Best Practices For Developers And Employers,” provides a roadmap to ensure the continuing impact of AI across all industries benefits workers. Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su introduced the guidelines, emphasizing the “shared responsibility to ensure that AI is used to expand equality, advance equity, develop opportunity and improve job quality.”

According to a recent release, the event united key leaders from labor, business, non-profit and government sectors in discussion about responsible AI deployment. The AI Best Practices are part of the DOL’s response to President Biden’s “Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence,” which focuses on safety, security, and fairness in the adoption of these technologies.

AI’s role in the workplace has sparked widespread discussion, with many urging caution to avoid the technology degrading job quality. Following the DOL’s announcement of its AI Best Practices, AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler, Partnership on AI CEO Rebecca Finlay and Microsoft Corp. VP/Deputy General Counsel Amy Pannoni were among those advocates and professionals who voiced their support for the department’s efforts.

More information on the DOL’s approach to AI is available on the department’s website.
