ASSP Recognizes Latest Fellow

The association publicly bestowed its top honor on Daniel Hopwood at last week’s Safety 2024 event.

The American Society of Safety Professionals took time to honor Daniel Hopwood, M.P.H., CSP, SMS, ARM, CBCP, FASSP, the vice president and director of risk control field services at Sompo, North America, as its 2024 Fellow during the Aug. 7 general session at last week’s Safety 2024 event in Denver.

While the ASSP had announced Hopwood as its 147th Fellow in April, Stephanie Gurnari, CSP, the chair of the ASSP’s PDC Planning Committee, publicly conferred the honor on Hopwood last week in Denver.

“Your accomplishments motivate us all to follow in your footsteps,” said Gurnari, who is the branch risk engineering services manager at Chubb. “Thank you for your hard work and dedication to this profession.”

As a member for more than 45 years, Hopwood said the association has been a central part of his professional life.

“ASSP has been the place; the rock; it’s been where you go for leadership and mentorship,” he told the general session’s audience. “It’s where you go to see your friends and the people that are important to you. And I think about that every month when I go to our chapter meeting.”

Gurnari asked Hopwood if he had any advice for his fellow safety professionals, and he reminded attendees that “What we do is really important. It’s meaningful.

“When we wake up in the morning, it might not be about being perfect every day, but we want to be pretty darn good,” he continued. “So, roll your sleeves up and get to work.”

When asked who he was grateful to in his development as a safety professional, Hopwood said he had a long list of people who have helped him in his career, including academics and employers, but he specifically thanked his wife, Leslie, and two daughters, Kylie and Kendal, for their love and support.

Gurnari also recognized some additional ASSP award recipients:

  • Leslie Rex Stockel, Ph.D., CSP, SMS, associate professor of professional practice at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., was named 2024 Outstanding Safety Educator.
  • Thomas Bobick, Ph.D., P.E., CSP, CPE, of Bobick and Associates Consulting, received the 2024 Thomas F. Bresnahan Standards Medal.
  • Matthew Herron, M.S., P.E., CSP, CPE, lead safety engineer for the Mechanical Engineering Division at Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, was named the 2024 Safety Professional of the Year.
