Safety 2024: ASSP, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Announce 10-Year Agreement

ASSP and USACE will focus on improving employee safety training and advancing occupational health practices.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have signed a new 10-year agreement to advance worker safety nationwide. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) was formalized on the opening day of the ASSP’s Safety 2024 Professional Development Conference and Exposition.

According to a recent release, the MOU outlines shared principles and objectives, including enhancing employee safety training, sharing best practices, and expanding the use of safety and health management systems. The partnership will also continue efforts to develop voluntary national consensus standards to shape workplace safety.

“We share a strong commitment to workplace safety and health, so sharing our knowledge and expertise makes good sense,” ASSP President Pam Walaski said in a statement. “This collaboration will leverage strengths, elevate the voice of our profession, and improve safety standards to reduce illnesses, injuries and fatalities.”

Mark Atkins, USACE’s chief of OSH, shared similar enthusiasm about the MOU with the ASSP.

“Our mutual interests in enhancing the well-being of workers across the country create valuable opportunities to work together,” Atkins said. “These shared principles can hopefully serve as a foundation for improving policies and processes that will ultimately save lives.”
