British Study Outlines Lowered Strength of Coronavirus Antibodies

A British study that began in June reveals that COVID-19 antibodies do not have a lasting effect toward immunity.

A study published on Monday by Imperial College London revealed that immunity to coronavirus is declining, according to CNN.

The study involved sending over 365,000 home finger-prick tests to people in England at 12, 18 and 24 weeks. The results found a more than 26% drop in coronavirus antibodies in a period of three months. When the study began in June, 6% of people tested had antibodies, but in September only 4.4% of people did.

This information surfaces after the United States experienced a new peak in COVID-19 cases last week.

“At least in this case, this virus is sort of acting like we can predict, which is a good thing because everything about this virus has been so off the wall,” said Dr. Claudia Hoyen, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at University Hospitals of Cleveland.

Experts who worked on the study say this proves that immunity to coronavirus decreases over a six to 12 month time frame.
