2019 Billion Steps Challenge Under Way

The Billion Steps Challenge began Jan. 1, 2019, and aims to promote good health and physical activity. APHA is observing National Public Health Week during April 1-7.

The American Public Health Association has set a goal in 2019 -- to take 1 billion steps or more by the end of this year's National Public Health Week, which is April 7.

The Billion Steps Challenge began Jan. 1, 2019, and aims to promote good health and physical activity. APHA is observing National Public Health Week during April 1-7.

The association has partnered with MoveSpring to give challenge participants free access to that company's fitness-tracking platform. Participants can start a team at any point during the challenge by signing up on the MoveSpring website or by downloading the MoveSpring app (available at Google Play or in the App Store). If asked, they should enter "APHA2019" as the organization code for APHA's Billion Steps Challenge.

APHA encourages participants to take family walks, schedule walking meetings at the office, or walk their children to school, adding, "Be sure to spread the word about your team's progress on social media using #APHABillionSteps."

APHA will track each team's total steps, and participants can track their individual and team progress through the end of the challenge in April.
