VPPPA Members Backing Codification Bills

They're supporting two identical bills before Congress, HR 1444 and S 1878, to codify VPP nationally and make it permanent.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Attendees from member companies of the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association weighed in on the association's ongoing bid to codify VPP nationally and make it permanent. Attendees at this year's Safety+ symposium here, an event for which VPPPA is partnering with the Tennessee Safety & Health Conference. They're supporting two identical bills before Congress, HR 1444 and S 1878, to accomplish that goal.

HR1444 currently has 69 bipartisan sponsors, while S 1878 has two, said Courtney Malveaux, a Jackson Lewis P.C. attorney who is VPPPA's government relations counsel. During the Labor & Management Open Forum here, he asked attendees to use laptops set up Aug. 28 in the symposium's registration area to email letters to their members of Congress asking them to back the bills.

Afterward, Malveaux said he believes the House and Senate committees that would take up the bills want to move legislation such as these two with the 2018 midterm elections drawing near, in order to show constituents at home that they've been active and effective. "This is a good window for us," he said.
