Gary Winn, Ph.D., CHST, is the 2018 William E. Tarrants Outstanding Safety Educator and Tim Page-Bottorff, CSP, CET, is the 2018 Edgar Monsanto Queeny Safety Professional of the Year.

The American Society of Safety Professionals has announced Gary Winn, Ph.D., CHST, is its 2018 William E. Both are to be honored during the Safety 2018 Professional Development Conference & Exposition, June 3-6 in San Antonio.

2018 Outstanding Safety Educator

Winn is a professor of safety management in the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering at West Virginia University. ASSE's announcement said his Managing Construction Safety class is so popular with civil engineering undergraduates that it has had a wait list since 1997, and he is the leader of the school's safety management master's degree program and occupational safety and health doctorate.

"Dr. Winn demonstrates the principles he espouses, in advising students, engaging external stakeholders to enhance student career opportunities and in the excellence of his teaching," said Kenneth R. Currie, Ph.D., P.E., department chairperson and professor at West Virginia University. "I've enjoyed his senior leadership in the development of our ABET assessment protocol, ensuring that our safety management program is always improving."

ASSE annually honors an occupational safety and health professional who demonstrates outstanding achievement in safety education. The award is named after Dr. William E. Tarrants, a pioneer in safety education who was an ASSE Fellow and president (1977-78).

2018 Safety Professional of the Year
Page-Bottorff, CSP, CET, is a senior consultant at SafeStart who transitioned from the U.S. Marine Corps. He has been an ASSE member since 2001 and serves as Region 2 vice president.

"Within our team of consultants and account managers, Tim rises to the top as a leader focused on reducing injuries on and off the job," said SafeStart CEO and President Larry Wilson. "Tim is a thought leader."

Page-Bottorff serves as deputy vice president for the ASSE Council on Region Affairs, has been active in the Training and Communications Practice Specialty, and served on the Leadership Conference Committee. "Tim leads by example, being a great role model for his region and his peers," said Maribeth Anderson, MPA, CSP, vice president of ASSE's Council on Region Affairs. "Tim is truly dedicated to the profession and to working together for the advancement of the Society."

This annual awards honors an occupational safety and health professional who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the safety field while making significant contributions to advancing the profession. The award is named after Edgar Monsanto Queeny, president of the Monsanto Company on April 16, 1947, when a freighter explosion destroyed the company's plant in Texas City, Texas.
