EU-OSHA Partners Preparing for Dangerous Substances Campaign

The campaign will address dangerous substances that can cause chronic or acute illness, such as respiratory diseases, cancer, mesothelioma, poisoning, skin diseases, reproductive problems and birth defects, and allergies.

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, also known as EU-OSHA, will launch its 2018-19 Campaign — Healthy Workplaces Manage Dangerous Substances — on April 24. EU-OSHA has scheduled a campaign partnership meeting in Brussels on March 20 to bring together European and international organizations, companies, and media partners interested in becoming campaign partners or renewing their partnership.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the risks posed by dangerous substances in the workplace and to promote a culture of risk prevention to eliminate, if possible, or effectively manage the risks.

The campaign will address dangerous substances that can cause chronic or acute illness, such as respiratory diseases, cancer, mesothelioma, poisoning, skin diseases, reproductive problems and birth defects, and allergies. Some dangerous substances pose safety risks, and workers can be exposed to them in various ways -- inhalation, skin exposure, or ingestion.

The campaign has the following objectives:

  • to raise awareness of the importance and relevance of managing dangerous substances in European workplaces
  • to promote risk assessment, elimination and substitution, as well as use of the hierarchy of controls
  • to raise awareness of the risks linked to exposure to carcinogens at work
  • to target groups of workers with specific needs and increased levels of risk (for example, women and young people)
  • to increase awareness of policy developments and the current legislative framework
