New Weather Radars Being Installed in Canada

A new unit in Radisson, Saskatchewan, is expected to be operational by the end of December 2017, and four other new ones are planned by the end of March 2019.

The government of Canada is installing new weather radar units across Canada, with the first one now being installed in Radisson, Saskatchewan. This unit is expected to be operational by the end of December 2017, and four other new ones are planned by the end of March 2019, and up to seven per year thereafter until the project ends in 2023.

Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Ralph Goodale made the announcement. Canadians in West-Central Saskatchewan will benefit from better, more timely warnings of severe weather thanks to the Radisson unit. It and the other units have an extended tornado-detection range, giving Canadians more lead time to take shelter during those events, authorities reported.

"To keep up with the effects of a changing climate, our scientists, meteorologists, and technologists can rely on the most advanced science and technology to deliver accurate and timely weather forecasts and warnings to Canadians. Having information sooner means that Canadians have more time to protect themselves and their property from the effects of severe weather," said Catherine McKenna, Canada's minister of Environment and Climate Change.
