HELP Committee Takes Up Several Nominations Today

Scheduled witnesses in the committee’s 2:30 p.m. hearing include nominees for surgeon general and some top HHS positions.

Members of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee are scheduled to hear testimony Aug. 1 from several people nominated by President Donald J. Trump for key agency positions, including a nominee for surgeon general and others for top HHS positions. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. in Washington, D.C., and will be webcast on the committee's website.

The nominees who will testify, according to the list on the committee's site, including Dr. Brett Giroir of College Station, Texas, nominated to be assistant secretary for health, and Dr. Robert Kadlec of Alexandria, Va., nominated to be assistant secretary of Health and Human Services for Preparedness and Response. (Kadlec is currently deputy staff director for the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and was a special assistant to the president for biodefense policy for President George W. Bush.)

Also on the list are Dr. Elinore F. McCance-Katz of Cranston, R.I., nominated to be assistant secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use at HHS (she is currently the chief medical officer for the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals and professor of psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University's Alpert Medical School); and Dr. Jerome M. Adams of Fishers, Ind., nominated to be surgeon general.

The president announced Adams' nomination on June 29. He is currently the Indiana State Health Commissioner and previously served as a staff anesthesiologist and assistant professor of anesthesia at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
