Pulp and Paper Conference in Oregon Set for Nov. 29-Dec. 2

Highlighting innovative ideas, the conference will cover "everything from lumber planer safety and safe railcar loading techniques to managing driver behavior and understanding the intersection between mindfulness and improving safety performance," Oregon OSHA reported.

Oregon OSHA and partners are presenting the 26th annual Western Pulp, Paper & Forest Products Safety & Health Conference at the Red Lion Hotel on the River – Jantzen Beach in Portland starting later this month, and the Oregon agency is urging workers, contractors, and employers in Oregon's pulp, paper, and forest products industries to attend the Nov. 29-Dec. 2 event.

Highlighting innovative ideas, the conference will cover "everything from lumber planer safety and safe railcar loading techniques to managing driver behavior and understanding the intersection between mindfulness and improving safety performance," Oregon OSHA reported.

The conference's keynote speaker will be Brad Livingston, with a "Just a Second Ago…" talk on Nov. 29. The agency's announcement said he "overcame a 5 percent chance of surviving injuries he incurred from back-to-back explosions while on the job. The explosions were entirely preventable. The factors that contributed to them were universal: shortcuts, complacency, pride, bad attitudes, and improper perspectives."

"It isn't just you that an injury could hurt, and many people don't realize the ripple effect they could start," he said. "My goal is to leave the audience with a newfound perspective on the importance of workplace safety – not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends, and co-workers, as well."

The conference will feature exhibits, company safety meetings, roundtable discussions, and workshops on:

  • A-Z incident investigation and root cause analysis techniques
  • Don't fall for it: Fall arrest and fall prevention during maintenance activities
  • Personal communication/responding to criticism
  • Water hammer safety
  • Lightning safety awareness: The facts you never knew
  • Tools for conscious leadership: Responsibility

The registration fee is $270 to attend the full conference, with the fee for one day being $90. Register online at safetyseries.cvent.com/wppfp16.
