OSHA Says Auto Parts Manufacturer Continues to Expose Workers to Amputation Hazards

Pyongsan America and Surge Staffing face a total of $106,020 in fines.

Employees of an automobile auto parts manufacturer in Auburn, Ala., faced the danger of being caught in machinery, hit by objects, and the risk of amputation, an OSHA inspection determined. The employer, Pyongsan America Inc., manufactures heating, ventilation, and air conditioning hoses for Hyundai, Kia, Chrysler, and General Motors.

Pyongsan, as well as Surge Staffing LLC, have been cited for 11 safety violations. Surge Staffing provides roughly 50 temporary employees to the manufacturer. Together, they face $106,020 in penalties.

"Pyongsan America continues to put workers, both permanent and temporary, at risk of serious injury or death by exposing them to serious workplace hazards," said Joseph Roesler, OSHA's area director in Mobile. "Employers must take responsibility for worker safety every day. They shouldn't wait until an OSHA inspection or worse, when someone is hurt, to evaluate and correct workplace deficiencies."

Repeated citations were issued to Pyongsan for: failing to develop and implement proper machine prevention procedures, failure to conduct inspections on equipment with multiple energy sources, failure to train employees working on hazardous energy sources, and failure to protect workers from amputation hazards.
