Clock Ticking for Western Canada Air Ambulance Service's Lottery

The STARS air ambulance service is headquartered in Calgary and operates out of six bases in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

A fundraising lottery used by the Calgary-based STARS air ambulance service to support its operations may not sell out this year, the Calgary Sun's Clara Ho reported Feb. 25 in an article where she attributed this to "Alberta's weakened economy" amid the slump in energy prices. In operation since 1985, the service has its headquarters in Calgary and operates out of six bases located in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

STARS is a charitable, not-for-profit organization reliant on government, corporate, and community support. According to information available on its website, the service provides emergency flights an average of eight times per day in the three provinces it serves and has flown more than 30,000 missions in all.

March 2 is the early bird deadline for tickets in the service's Alberta Lottery, and the final ticket deadline is March 23. Ho reported that failing to sell out this time would be the first such failure in 23 years for the organization, "which has also noticed a drop in individual and corporate donations and event fundraising over the last few months," she wrote.

Tickets for the drawing can be purchased at www.starslotteryalberta.ca.
