U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez will deliver a keynote address at DOL's Future of Work Symposium on Dec. 10, when leaders of several departmental units will sit down with business leaders, academics, workers, worker advocates, philanthropic leaders, technology developers, and others for a series of panel discussions. From 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time, they'll all be debating what the shifting nature of work relationships mean for DOL's work and for employers generally.

DOL announced the symposium will consider such questions as these:

  • Have changes in workplace relationships shifted economic risk onto workers and their families?
  • Where is the synergy between effectively enforcing worker protections and encouraging innovation?
  • What do changing work arrangements mean for worker access to benefits such as retirement savings and unemployment insurance?
  • Who's responsible for worker safety on multi-employer work sites?
  • How do we adapt department programs to train workers for a changing labor market?

Participants from DOL scheduled to participate are OSHA Assistant Secretary Dr. David Michaels, Solicitor of Labor Patricia Smith, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Policy Sharon Block, Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division Dr. David Weil, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employee Benefits and Security Phyllis Borzi, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Employment and Training Eric Seleznow. The event will be broadcast live online.
