AIHce 2015 Nanotechnology Session Looks at Exposure Assessments

A group of speakers discussed nanomaterials and new ways to evaluate and measure their existence in numerous working conditions.

SALT LAKE CITY-- NIOSH representatives kicked off a nanomaterials discussion on June 3 at AIHce 2015, discussing the refinement of the Nanomaterial Emission Assessment Technique into the Nanomaterial Exposure Assessment Technique, otherwise known as NEAT 2.0. This technique was developed to measure nanotechnology emissions in the workplace across a variety of industries.

A second presentation regarding nanomaterials featured a recent graduate of Purdue University who explained his characterizations of nanoparticles that are generated from synthesizing advanced materials. To explore these characterizations, a group of researchers tested a furnace for nanomaterial emissions.

Some of the other topics included: exposure associated with personal protective clothing contaminated with nanoparticles, an evaluation of self-supporting, single-walled carbon nanotube bucky paper sorbents, and a comparison of simulated workplace protection factors offered by N95 and P100 air purifying respirators.
