FDNY Graduates 116 New EMTs

The new graduates will be assigned to units throughout New York City.

New York City Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro presided over the graduation of 116 Emergency Medical Technicians on April 24. Members of the class speak several foreign languages, including Cantonese, Creole, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish. The new graduates will be assigned to units throughout the city.

"In 2014, FDNY responded 1.6 million times when New Yorkers reached out to us for help, and we provided outstanding medical care, bringing comfort and compassion to those who need it most," said Nigro. "For these new EMTs – our mission is now theirs, as well – [it is] to protect and serve the people of this city and to help make an immediate, positive impact in every neighborhood and community."

The fire department's EMTs train for 10 weeks at the EMS Academy, learning CPR, patient medical and trauma assessments, oxygen and ventilation skills, management of hypotension and fractures, spinal immobilization and emergency childbirth, and emergency vehicle operation.
