Nanorama Laboratory Tool Now Available in English

This free online tool was developed by the Innovation Society in collaboration with the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the raw materials and chemical industry. It offers information on safe handling of nanomaterials.

The Nanorama Laboratory, an online, interactive tool to help laboratory personnel understand how to safely handle nanomaterials, is now available in English, the Federal Association for Occupational Safety and Health (Basi) recently reported. A "nanorama," a word coined from blending "nano" and "panorama," is a 360-degree e-learning module in which the user enters a virtual space and moves around in it. This one was developed by the Innovation Society, located in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in collaboration with the German Social Accident Insurance Institution, for the raw materials and chemical industry (BG RCI). A complement to hazard evaluation assessments, it allows users to assess occupational exposures to nanomaterials and identify necessary protective measures.

It is one of three interactive educational tools available on the Nano-Platform "Safe Handling of Nanomaterials" site, with the platform and the other two "nanoramas," one concerning the construction industry and the other concerning automotive manufacturing, available in German.

Basi is chiefly involved in presenting the A+A Congress and Trade Fair, which is taking place again this year (Oct. 27-30) in Dusseldorf, Germany.

"Due to the attractive visual implementation and the interactive contents, the Nanorama Laboratory offers a great introduction to protective measures in laboratories," said Dr. Thomas H. Brock, head of the Expert Committee on Hazardous Substances of the BG RCI. "By exploring the Nanorama Laboratory, laboratory staff actively deals with occupational health and safety in laboratories and its practical implementation with regard to nanomaterials."

The existing nanoramas will be joined by another nanorama module soon, according to Basi's news release.
