58-year-old Worker Dies Due to Ignored Safety Hazards, OSHA Claims

OSHA has cited Hussman Corp. for three willful and 12 serious hazards.

A maintenance worker died after being pinned down between a scrap metal table and a railing at Hussmann Corp.’s Bridgeton facility, according to a news release from OSHA, which has cited the company for three willful and 12 serious safety violations.

"This tragic loss could have been prevented," said Bill McDonald, OSHA's area director in St. Louis. "OSHA inspectors found workers at risk of life-threatening hazards because Hussmann Corp. failed to train its workforce to prevent unintentional operation of dangerous machinery. This company needs to fix safety procedure deficiencies so no other family is forced to suffer."

The three willful violations are for not placing devices on machinery to prevent the sudden start-up or movement of equipment during service and maintenance. Hussman Corp. also failed to correct numerous problems relate to its lockout/tagout procedures, according to the agency, which said Husman Corp. also failed to train workers on safety procedures and lacked effective safeguards for moving parts on machinery. For this, OSHA issued 12 serious violations.
