New Guidelines Published for Potato Industry

The new guide will provide various resources for those in the industry, including best practices for production and harvest operations, processing and distribution

According to an article from Food Safety News, the National Potato Council has published new guidelines for the potato industry. Because potatoes are rarely consumed raw, they will most likely be excluded from the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act. In addition, health risk from eating contaminated potatoes is very low.

The new best practices guide, as published by the National Potato Council, helps growers, shippers and packers. The guide, entitled “Commodity-Specific Safety Guide for the Production, Harvest, Storage and Packing of Potatoes” has sections that cover best practices for production, harvesting, storage operations, packinghouse operations and more.

The guide does not provide information on processing, distribution, retail or food service operations, according to Food Safety News. To read the guide, visit The National Potato Council’s website.
