CA Highway Patrol Maintains Senior Driving Classes

Its announcement said the state's 2020 population is expected to include more than 6 million people 65 or older, many still driving.

The California Highway Patrol recently announced it is continuing its Age Well Drive Smart program, an educatioal program for seniors. becuase the state's senior population is proving to be one of the fastest-growing driving-age demographics in the state. The state's 2020 population is expected to include more than 6 million people age 65 and older, and for many of them driving will be their chief mode of transportation, CHP's announcement said.

The program helps senior drivers tune up their driving skills, refresh their knowledge of the rules of the road, and learn about normal age-related physical changes and how they affect driving ability, according to CHP. The program is supported by a Keeping Everyone Safe IV grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, with funding provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"During the class, seniors have the opportunity to view curriculum designed to address their needs, share their personal concerns, ask questions, and consider the different options available to them," CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said.

Classes are offered at local CHP offices and senior centers. To locate a CHP office, visit www.chp.ca.gov.
