2012 Congress to Honor Dole

A highlight of the event will be the presentation of the Flame of Life Award to Elizabeth Dole, who served in the cabinets of both Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Next month's National Safety Congress and Expo in Orlando, Fla., will celebrate more than the triumphs of the sponsoring National Safety Council during its first century. The council has revealed a few more highlights of the big conference, including the presentation of the Flame of Life Award during the opening session to Elizabeth Dole, who has had a long, illustrious career with many safety accomplishments to her credit.

Dole was secretary of Transportation from 1983 to 1987, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, and random drug testing was initiated by DOT during that time. She was secretary of Labor during 1989-1990, when George H.W. Bush was president. She became the president of the American Red Cross a year later, serving until 1999, when she resigned and turned to politics. She served as a U.S. senator representing North Carolina from 2003 to 2009.

Other highlights of the conference include updates from OSHA Assistant Secretary Dr. David Michaels and NIOSH Director Dr. John Howard, the announcement of the 2012 Robert W. Campbell Award winner, and the launch of the Campbell Institute, a new EHS Center of Excellence at the safety council.
