Bruce Evans, assistant chief of business and support services at the North Las Vegas Fire Department, will receive the James O. Page EMS Achievement Award during this year's Fire-Rescue Med, the annual International Association of Fire Chiefs conference taking place May 1–5 in Las Vegas. This award is presented by the IAFC EMS Section and Physio-Control, Inc. to someone who has played a key role in creating and promoting non-clinical innovation and achievements in fire service-based EMS management and leadership that have had a positive impact nationally.

This year's Fire-Rescue Med is packed with useful educational sessions about EMS management, staffing, safety, and training. In a sunrise session at 7 a.m. Tuesday that is titled "Recovering from the Economic Storm: EMS Focus," Chief Rob Brown, chair of IAFC's Economic Task Force, will examine trends facing departments around the country.

Evans has 28 years' experience in EMS, having begun his career at West Des Moines EMS in Iowa before moving to Mercy Ambulance in Las Vegas and then the Henderson Fire Department. He is a past chairman of the National Association of EMT's Safety Committee, is in the working group creating the EMS Safety Course for that association, and serves on the National Fire Academy's strategic planning committee for EMS.

Evans also is an NFPA Fire Instructor III and a faculty member for the College of Southern Nevada's Fire Technology Program. The IAFC EMS Section created an EMS award in 1994 and presented it to a TV show, Rescue 911, at that time. The following year, the award was given to James O. Page to recognize his years of leadership and help in promoting fire service-based EMS.
