Partnership to Support Drug-Free Workplaces in South Carolina

The Council on Alcohol and Drugs is partnering with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce to promote drug-free workplace programs to employers in South Carolina. The Council on Alcohol and Drugs has assisted more than 9,700 companies in 12 states in achieving certification as a drug-free workplace.

State certified drug-free workplaces receive a state-mandated five percent discount on workers' compensation insurance premiums.

Shelly Davis, coordinator for the South Carolina program at The Council on Alcohol and Drugs, said, "In addition to the state-mandated discount on workers' compensation insurance, certified drug-free employers maximize their level of productivity, enhance competitive positions in the marketplace and reach desired levels of success without experiencing the costs, delays and tragedies associated with work-related accidents resulting from substance abuse by employees."

Otis B. Rawl, Jr., president and CEO of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, said, "The South Carolina Chamber is proud to partner with The Council on Alcohol and Drugs to work with employers to provide drug-free workplaces for employees, which will help keep workplaces productive and employees healthy. This partnership will ensure a larger pool of drug-free applicants for South Carolina workplaces."

Chuck Wade, president and CEO of The Council on Alcohol and Drugs, and state director of Georgia's drug-free workplace program, said, "Drug-free workplace programs increase productivity, reduce absenteeism and tardiness, cut workers' compensation claims in half, reduce medical costs, increase overall workforce morale and reduce theft and other forms of crime in the workplace."

State certification in South Carolina requires a substance abuse policy, supervisor training, employee education, drug testing and an employee assistance program or resource file. The Council on Alcohol and Drugs assists its drug-free workplace members in achieving and maintaining certification.
