First aid and CPR courses taught at the employer sites are among those for which the N.C. Industrial Commission will begin charging fees.

New Fees Coming for NC Industrial Commission Safety Training

The fees for training and courses provided by the commission's Safety Section take effect Dec. 1 in three categories: per-person specialty courses/workshops, flat-rate full or half days once per month for a year, and hourly rates for as-needed training.

A new fee schedule is taking effect next week, on Dec. 1, for the large selection of training courses provided by the North Carolina Industrial Commission's Safety Section. Prices are set in three categories: per-person specialty courses/workshops, flat-rate full or half days once per month for a year, and hourly rates for as-needed training. The section's director, Dennis E. Parnell, told stakeholders in a notice posted on the NCIC site that state funding and services were reduced during this recession, but a "large-scale outpouring of support and documented reduction in accidents, claims and costs from clients utilizing Safety Section consultative services" caused the North Carolina legislature to allow the section "to continue in its 80 year history of service through the enactment of a reasonable fee-for-service program."

"All fees represent very competitive rates when compared to other internal or external training options," Parnell added.

The section conducts accident prevention and investigation courses, and also courses in first aid and CPR (the National Safety Council's 10-hour Standard First Aid and CPR course, taught on employers' sites); forklift safety; defensive driving (a four-hour National Safety Council classroom course); workers' compensation for supervisors and managers; and, for employees, courses on bloodborne pathogens, chlorine safety, confined space, cumulative trauma disorders, electrical safety, eye safety, fall protection, fire safety, hand safety, HazCom safety, job safety analysis, lifting safety, lockout/tagout, respirator fit testing, respiratory protection, safety attitude, slips and falls, and welding, cutting, and brazing safety.

The 80th Annual N.C. Statewide Safety Conference will be held on May 11-14, 2010, at the Joseph S. Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, N.C.
