Bosch Boilers Recalled for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Hazard

Bosch Thermotechnology Corp., of Londonderry, N.H., has issued a voluntary safety recall affecting its gas boilers, which were manufactured in Germany by its parent company Bosch Thermotechnology Gmbh. The recall, conducted by the firm in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, involves the Buderus GB312 gas-fired, floor-standing condensing boilers. According to CPSC, a problem with the boiler’s ignition due to insufficient output voltage from the boiler’s transformer can damage the boiler’s venting, which in turn can result in leaking flue gases, posing a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning to consumers.

Two incidents were reported in Germany, neither of which resulted in injury, according to CPSC. No incidents or injuries reported in the United States.

The recall affects Buderus boilers sold by plumbing and heating wholesale distributors to plumbing and heating contractors nationwide from April 2008 through February 2009 for between $12,000 and $24,000 installed. Model numbers included in this recall are: 312/90, 312/120, 312/160, 312/200, 312/240 and 312/280. “BUDERUS GB312” is printed on the front of the boiler. The boilers are blue, approximately 60 inches high and between 39 and 55 inches wide.

CPSC says Bosch has directly contacted consumers who purchased the recalled boilers, inspected and, if necessary, repaired the boilers. The agency adds it still is interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to this product recall or involving a different hazard with the same product.
