AIHA Hosts Mold TeleWeb

The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) will host "Mold: Exploring Sampling, Analysis, and Data Interpretation," an intermediate to advanced TeleWeb Virtual Seminar on Feb. 19, 2009, from 2-4:30 p.m. ET.

The first part of the TeleWeb will address the development and use of bioaerosol inertial impactors (spore traps) and how they were developed in the mid-1800s and continue to provide more efficient, effective, and convenient air sampling today. A prudent indoor air quality investigator will monitor these developments and choose devices with the highest efficiencies and lowest coefficient of variation to reduce uncertainties in the sampling/analysis process.

The second part of the TeleWeb will discuss the probability of failure in interpreting fungal sampling results. The lack of health-based standards for airborne fungi presents particular challenges to industrial hygiene/public health practitioners. In the absence of reference numerical airborne concentrations, data collected from a suspect building is compared with a suitable reference zone, such as outdoor air.

Featured speakers include Chris Spicer, CIH, CHMM, and James Tucker, Ph.D. Attendees will be provided with tools to enable them to:

  • Review and select bioaerosol inertial impactors (spore traps)
  • Discuss recent data investigating common fungi and studies of various spore traps
  • Examine differences in hypothesis testing for bioaerosols and building investigational models based in microbial populations
  • Evaluate airborne contaminant concentrations and the statistical significance of failure rates for a given criterion
  • Recognize the implications and limitations of bioaersols data distribution, analysis, and interpretation
