American Airlines Scraps 900 More Flights for Safety Checks

For the third consecutive day, American Airlines is canceling hundreds of flights in order to conduct safety inspections on the wiring bundles of its entire fleet of 300 MD-80 aircraft. The airline said it would cancel 900 flights today. Yesterday it canceled 1,094 flights, and Tuesday it canceled 460 flights to do the safety checks. So far, only 79 of the airline's MD-80 aircraft have returned to service.

The carrier has told its customers that it will provide refunds, vouchers, and compensation for overnight stays. The situation has caused long lines at many U.S. airports, especially at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (KORD/ORD) and Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport (KDFW/DFW).
