Dust Explosions: Different Standards, Different Properties, and Different Precautions
If you are handling or processing combustible dusts, you will have heard of National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 652: Standard on Fundamentals of Combustible Dusts. It addresses the general requirements for the management of combustible dust fire and explosion hazards. By now you should have completed the mandated DHA (Dust Hazards Analysis) and acted on the findings, but what if your powder is non-standard? Does it have a broad particle size distribution? Maybe it is a mixture of other powders or you’re handling multiple powders such that testing becomes factorially uneconomic? And what if your industry has its own NFPA combustible dust standards? There are some five industry and/or commodity-specific dust explosion standards; which one should you use when there is contradiction?
This presentation sets out a path to gaining a proper understanding of your dust explosion risks, even when the risks presented by your powders are more complicated or difficult to ascertain than usual. By understanding the laboratory tests that are available to understand your powder’s fire and explosion characteristics, it’s possible to establish exactly which precautions you should take to prevent dust explosion – as well as enabling the proper design of explosion protection measures.
- Understand how to deal with non-standard materials where there may be powder mixtures, too many powders to test or broad powder size distributions.
- Understand the requirements of NFPA 652 for the management of combustible dust fire and explosion hazards, and the differences between this and NFPA industry or commodity-specific standards.
- Learn how, even with complicated or unusual materials and situations, solutions towards safe plant can still be found.
