USCG to Conduct Search & Rescue Demo, Canoe Safety Overview

Media are invited to Coast Guard Station Point Judith, R.I., Friday morning for a search and rescue demonstration and a kayak and canoe safety overview provided by members of Station Point Judith and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The demo will take place at 10 a.m. June 5 at the USCG Point Judith boat house on Great Island Road in Galilee, R.I.

According to USCG, the New England region suffered the loss of 55 recreational boaters and paddlers in 2008. Four kayak and 10 canoe fatalities accounted for 25 percent of the total.

"As the temperatures continue to climb, we're seeing a substantial increase in the number of paddlers on the water," said Chief Petty Officer Patrick Foley, Station Point Judith's executive petty officer. "We encourage people to go out and enjoy their time on the water, but it's imperative that they take a step back and ensure they've taken all the necessary safety precautions before they head out."
