IRS, Treasury Promote EITC Awareness Day--Tomorrow
Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson, Jr., U.S. Treasurer Anna Escobedo Cabral, Acting IRS Commissioner Linda Stiff, and others will hold a press conference on Thursday, Jan. 31, marking Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day, which promotes the earned income tax credit. The EITC is one of the government's largest cash assistance programs targeted to low-income, working Americans, and, according to the Treasury Department, has successfully brought millions of Americans out of poverty. Yet nearly one in four Americans who are eligible for the credit do not claim this important benefit, the department says.
The Treasury and the IRS will promote EITC Awareness Day in conjunction with hundreds of local area partners who will be holding similar events across the country to promote the EITC and free tax preparation services for working families. For more information on the EITC, visit the IRS Web site at IRS.gov. The press conference, taking place tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. EST in the Treasury Department's Media Room (4121) will also be webcast on the department's Web site, www.treasury.gov.
