Combustible Dust Safety – from Findings to Fixes

Date: Thursday October 16, 2025 at 2:00pm ET - 1:00pm CT - 11:00am PT

Facility owners and operators handling potentially combustible dust were required to complete a Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA) by September 7, 2020 — five years after the effective date of the first edition of NFPA 652: Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust. In addition, the DHA must be reviewed and updated at least every five years.

It is our experience that, while some companies have yet to arrange their initial DHA, many have completed it within the required five-year period. Those DHAs would have likely contained recommendations to obtain data on the ignition sensitivity and explosion severity characteristics of their powders/dusts, improve housekeeping practices, manage the identified competent ignition sources, and arrange explosion protection and isolation for certain process equipment.

Although the obligatory 5-year review and update of the initial DHA is overdue for some companies, we are finding that many have had difficulties implementing the recommendations proposed in their initial DHAs.

This webinar starts by providing an overview of NFPA 660: Standard for Combustible Dusts and Particulate Solids, which came into effect on December 6th, 2024, and is an amalgamation of NFPA 652 and other NFPA industry- and commodity-specific standards. We’ll then review some issues companies have faced when implementing their DHA recommendations. Building on this background, we will focus on a data informed approach to preventing and protecting against dust flash fires and explosions. This includes practical strategies for controlling fuel, oxygen, and ignition sources, as well as measures for explosion protection and isolation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the requirements of NFPA 660 for the management of combustible dust fire, flash fire, and explosion hazards, including those chapters that have replaced the NFPA industry- and commodity specific standards.
  • Recognize some of the challenges experienced by companies in their implementation of the DHA recommendations.
  • Review a data-informed approach to preventing and protecting against dust flash fires and explosions.
