Combustible Dust: Implementing and Reviewing DHA Recommendations

Many companies completed their Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) a few years ago for all areas of their facilities that handle or process Combustible Dust – in compliance with the NFPA 652. Those DHAs will likely contain recommendations to collect explosion test data on powders/ dusts, introduce certain ignition source control measures, and provide for explosion protection of plant. Although for some companies, their obligatory 5-year review is approaching, we are finding them still having difficulties in practically adopting all of the recommendations proposed in their first DHA.

In this webinar, we provide a refresher overview of NFPA 652 – ‘Standard on The Fundamentals of Combustible Dust’, and then focus on some of the issues companies are having in implementing the recommended dust explosion prevention and protection measures. We address dust explosion test data and how it should be interpreted and used to control dust explosion risk. We also look at how ignition source prevention is practically applied and review some of the options for dust explosion protection and isolation.

For those companies that are approaching their 5-year review, we consider ways in which the DHA review process can be approached to ensure full compliance with NFPA 652 without performing the whole Dust Hazard Analysis from scratch.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the requirements of NFPA 652 for the management of combustible dust fire, flash fire, and explosion hazards, and the relationship between this and other existing NFPA industry or commodity-specific standards on combustible dusts.
  2. Examine some of the problems experienced by companies in their implementation of the DHA recommendations, in their goal of compliance with NFPA 652.
  3. Look at how the 5-year DHA review process can be undertaken cost effectively and without repeating the whole DHA project from scratch.
