Why Traditional Hard Hats May Fail in Common Worksite Accidents - Transitioning from Type 1 Helmets & the Effect of Rotational Motion
The construction industry is undergoing a noticeable shift in head protection. Traditional hard hats are effectively no different than when they were introduced over 100 years ago. Type 1 hard hats are designed to protect wearers from impacts to the top of the head only. The problem with this is that these helmets often fail to protect workers from head injuries during slips, trips, and falls if they fall off the wearer’s head.
The industry has taken note: Type 2 helmets, which can include chinstraps, are increasingly required on job sites. Type 2 helmets are designed to help protect workers from lateral impact to the front, back, side, and top of the head. While this is an improvement, none of the current standards require testing for rotational motion and how helmets can address potential traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).
In this webinar, Joe Brandel would discuss why the industry should consider transitioning from Type 1 to Type 2 hard hats, and what to consider with rotational motion and the role it plays in TBIs.
