Indoor Air Quality and Human Performance Improvement Synergy
Three unique indoor air quality (IAQ) case study profiles are described. Using storytelling, the speakers emphasize the often overlooked emotional and human performance improvement (HPI) aspects of an effective IAQ investigation. While recognizing the inherent value of typical IAQ problem-solving investigative techniques (i.e., field visits, interviews, building evaluation and air sampling/analysis, as warranted), the authors challenge investigators to first build rapport and trust with clients (or internal customers) by demonstrating high emotional intelligence (EI) and HPI principles.
Specifically, active listening, showing empathy, regulating emotions and responding appropriately, are all important aspects of navigating and eventually achieving a positive IAQ investigative outcome. While seeing things from the other person’s point of view can be challenging, spending time looking at the situation from another’s perspective can provide investigators the first step toward finding a middle ground between varying points of view.
