Understanding Exposure Hazards and Controls in the Upstream Oil and Gas Industry

Oil and gas extraction workers have significant risks for exposures to a variety of compounds including hydrogen sulfide, acid gases, hydrocarbons (potentially resulting in flammable and oxygen deficient atmospheres), diesel particulate matter, elements, and minerals such as respirable crystalline silica. This presentation will provide an overview of chemical exposures this worker population faces and the past and current work NIOSH has conducted to assess them.

In addition to these chemical hazards, oil and gas workers are subject to physical hazards such as noise and heat stress. The presenter will also discuss a new NIOSH research study to systematically characterize and assess noise and ototoxicant exposures in the upstream oil and gas industry, evaluate controls currently implemented in the industry, and explore the extent of hearing loss experienced by OGE workers. Additionally, this presentation will preview the “NORA Spring Summit: Noise and Heat Stress in the Oilfield,” a free virtual summit highlighting state-of-the-art knowledge on assessment and control of workers’ exposures to noise and heat stress in the oilfield.

Bradley King is a certified industrial hygienist at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). He holds a PhD in Environmental Health Science from Johns Hopkins University and a master’s degree in Public Health from Saint Louis University. He received his commission as an Environmental Health Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service in 2002, currently holding the rank of Captain. He joined NIOSH in 1999 in the Health Hazard Evaluation program in Cincinnati, Ohio, responding to requests from workers, employers, and union officials to evaluate occupational exposures at worksites across the country. Since 2013, he has worked in NIOSH’s Western States Division in Denver, Colorado; current research interests include evaluating occupational exposures in the upstream oil and gas industry. Bradley currently serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors for the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

Safety in the oil and gas industry is mission-critical – especially during turnarounds. With more workers and tight schedules, and when every hour of downtime impacts the bottom line, creating a safe environment is essential to returning facilities back to peak performance quickly. Even more, when you safeguard your workers with the best possible PPE, the families and communities that rely on them are positively impacted as well, giving an even stronger meaning to our promise to protect one, protect all. Honeywell oil and gas solutions are designed to keep your workforce safe in critical environments. https://sps.honeywell.com/us/en/industries/infrastructure/oil-gas?utm_source=webinar&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=22-q1-sps-hppe-usa-ohs_webinar

Sensidyne Gas Detection
On-the-spot detection of hazardous gases and vapors is critical in the field. Sensidyne’s Gas Detection Pump Kit is a lightweight, rugged, portable gas detection solution. Our portfolio of over 350 tubes includes those highly utilized in the oil & gas industry, detecting various concentrations of H2S, Water Vapor, and Mercaptan. The best-in-class direct reading colorimetric tubes are highly reliable and shatterproof with a low cost per sample. The piston-type volumetric pump with a fail-safe handle locks at two volumes, eliminating incomplete samples that can occur with squeeze-type pumps. The hand pump withstands harsh environments, is spark-proof if dropped, and comes with a lifetime warranty. https://www.sensidyne.com/colorimetric-gas-detector-tubes?ohswbnr021022
