The Specification of Arc Flash Hazard Calculations Based on IEEE1584.1
If an arc flash hazard is present, the plant assesses the risk and decides on methods to control that risk. Most plants utilize the services of a subject matter expert to perform the arc flash hazard calculation (arc flash engineering study) that is used in the risk assessment process.
Guidance on this interaction between the plant and the subject matter expert is provided by IEEE1584.1: “Draft Guide for the Specification of Scope and Deliverable Requirements for an Arc-Flash Hazard Calculation Study in Accordance with IEEE Std 1584.” This standard is presently being updated, and the latest developments on the draft will be discussed. The webinar will also provide examples of daily tasks that present an arc flash hazard and work through a risk assessment exercise.

Zarheer Jooma, P.E., IEEE(SM’17)
Zarheer performs electrical network design, arc flash studies, electrical safety training and auditing. He has convened and chaired arc flash safety standards and is a member of both ASTM and IEC electrical safety standards committees regulating arc rated PPE. Zarheer has published several peer-reviewed papers on Electrical Safety, spoken at numerous safety conferences both locally and internationally, contributed to wording on the NFPA70E standard, performed several arc flash incident investigations, and is currently working on updating IEEE1584.1 regarding the scoping of arc flash engineering studies. He holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering, is a registered professional engineer, and a senior member of the IEEE.
