You provide training to keep your employees as safe as possible when working at heights. You give them all the do’s and don’ts; you hold regular safety meetings; you do everything right, but they keep doing things the wrong way. Sometimes it’s not the operator, it’s the product. Someone who is very safety conscience and confident in their job might report a safety problem. Others will just try and make it work. Sometimes the problems are so longstanding the wrong way has become the only way. When well-trained people keep making bad choices at heights, it’s not necessarily a sign of bad training; it’s often a sign that you need better equipment.
I have had several safety officers tell me the excepted way to level a ladder is to stack bricks and boards under the low side to build it up. You might be thinking “what’s wrong with that.” That’s because we have all been doing it wrong for so long it has become an acceptable practice. Let’s discuss the latest training tools available and the need for new, safer products to get every one of your people working at heights home safe and sound at the end of the day.

Speaker:
Dave Francis has been in the ladder business for over thirty years. As a college student he cleaned the offices of Little Giant Ladder Systems at night and has stayed with the company ever since. Working his way up the ladder (pun intended), Dave became the Director of R&D and holds five U.S. patents for improvements in ladder design. He is now the National Safety Director, with the sole purpose of preventing ladder accidents and hopefully saving lives by promoting ladder safety training and innovations in safe ladder design. His goal is the same as yours, getting everyone home to their families at the end of the day. Little Giant provides Dave’s training services free of charge. Dave has held training meetings all over the country with some of the nation’s largest organizations, including ExxonMobil, NASA, Boeing, Comcast, TimeWarner, Johnson & Johnson and many other smaller companies as well.
