Occupational Exposure to Respirable Crystalline Silica During Hydraulic Fracturing

Hydraulic fracturing has been used for close to 50 years. Coupled with directional drilling, it is the key technological advance responsible for the oil and gas "boom" occurring in many basins across the United States.

This presentation describes the background for the 2010 NIOSH Field Effort to Assess Chemical Exposures in Oil and Gas Workers, which was initiated to assess the occupational health risks for unconventional oil and gas extraction workers. After taking full-shift exposure assessments at hydraulic fracturing sites in five states, NIOSH determined that exposures to respirable crystalline silica (quartz) exceeded OSHA, NIOSH, and ACGIH criteria -- in some cases by a factor of ten or more. NIOSH developed a variety of recommendations to control workplace silica exposures, including a patent-pending technology to control dust emissions from large sand moving machinery.

Eric Esswein, is a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service where he holds the rank of Captain. He is the first named inventor for two patents in the area of chemical detection and decontamination which have been commercialized and sold nationally and internationally.
