ASSP Updates Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for Fleet Management

ASSP Updates Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for Fleet Management

The ASSP has revised a key standard to improve fleet safety practices and reduce motor vehicle crashes.

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) has updated a voluntary consensus standard to improve motor vehicle safety for workers. The revised ANSI/ASSP Z15.1-2024 standard focuses on developing safe practices for managing fleets, such as speed management, driver training, and impaired and distracted driving.

According to a recent release, the standard is critical for the 3.5 million fleets across North America that operate 32 million commercial vehicles. Key revisions to the standard include strengthened incident reporting and analysis requirements, as well as adaptations to reflect modern vehicles, technologies and current operating conditions.

“This safety standard is significant because motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of work-related fatalities,” ASSP President Pam Walaski said in a statement. “These tragic incidents are avoidable. Employers need expert guidance on how to identify and manage risks their workers face on the road.”

The revision process took two and a half years and included input from 11 safety and health experts from various sectors. Voluntary standards, like Z15.1-2024, offer critical guidance for industries where federal regulations might not meet evolving safety needs. ASSP has revised or developed 15 workplace safety standards in the past year.
