MARAD Issues Policy on Certification of Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Trainers
The new certification process will allow training providers to demonstrate that their training program is consistent with model standards promulgated by the U.S. Coast Guard in 2012
The Maritime Administration, a DOT agency, has published a policy for the certification of cruise vessel security and safety training providers, as authorized under the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010. This new certification process will afford an opportunity for security and safety training providers to demonstrate that their training program is consistent with model standards for security and safety training that were promulgated by the Coast Guard in 2012; MARAD will list certified training provider organizations on its website and notify the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Port State Control of training organizations whose certification is effective.
MARAD, the Coast Guard, and the FBA developed the model course three years ago; the training requirements apply to passenger vessels that carry at least 250 passengers; have on-board sleeping facilities for each passenger; are on a voyage that embarks and disembarks passengers in the United States; and are not engaged on a coastwise voyage.
