DOT Seeking Comments on Possible Voice Communications Ban on Flights

The agency seeks comments on whether or not it should propose a rule banning voice communications via mobile devices on flights.

The Department of Transportation is now seeking public comments on whether or not it should propose a rule that would ban voice communications via mobile devices on flights in the United States. The proposed ban would apply to flights within the United States and also flights to and from the country.

Comments about the advance notice of proposed rulemaking on Use of Mobile Wireless Devices for Voice Calls on Aircraft can be submitted for the next 30 days.

The ANPRM comes in the wake of concerns raised by the public, airlines, flight attendants, and members of Congress regarding in-flight phone calls. The FCC issued a proposed rule that would change its current prohibition of the use of cellular service on planes due to "increasing public interest in using mobile wireless data services on board aircraft." According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, DOT would like to give members of the public a significant opportunity to voice their opinions about a possible ban.
