DOT Awards Nearly $900 Million to NY MTA

The organization awards the money as part of the MTA’s ongoing efforts since Hurricane Sandy

DOT has awarded the New York MTA $886 million to commend its ongoing efforts since Hurricane Sandy, according to a press release from DOT. Anthony Foxx, the US Transportation Secretary, and Peter Rogoff, the Federal Transit Administrator, awarded the money last week in order to help the city continue rebuilding its transportation system in the wake of last year’s hurricane.

The money will go toward replacing and/or fixing equipment that was damaged or ruined during the storm. In addition to funding future recovery projects, the money also aims to reimburse the MTA for funds already spent. According to the press release, this award “allows MTA to begin drawing down an additional $886 million from the $3.8 billion FTA had allocated to the MTA for Sandy-related work.”

The breakdown of the funds is as follows: Rail support and equipment facilities repair ($535 million), electrical and power distribution repair ($138.9 million), signal and communication repair ($88.1 million), transitway line restoration ($91.5 million) and rail stations, stops and terminals ($32 million).
