Florida Highway Gains Accident Prevention Equipment

Following a fatal accident on Interstate 75 in Gainesville, the city decided to implement safety equipment.

A fatal accident that occurred almost two years ago on Interstate 75 in Gainesville, Fla., has prompted transportation officials to install preventative safety equipment, according to an article published by The Tampa Tribune.

The accident, which killed 11 people, occurred on a foggy, smoky road, and the new equipment is designed to warn drivers of impending and/or deteriorating weather conditions. The location where the accident occurred is a low-lying stretch prone to fog. Smoke from a nearby brush fire and fog contributed to the accident that occurred there two years ago.

The article notes that the area where Interstate 75 meets Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park will be equipped with infrared cameras, standard cameras, visibility sensors, dynamic messaging signs, and vehicle detection devices. Last week, officials from the Florida Highway Patrol, law enforcement, and DOT met to discuss the safety installation, with the equipment to be installed over the course of the next year. The project costs around $2.1 million.
